A useful tissue machine proposal starts with the product the factory intends to manufacture. A short inquiry such as “Please quote a toilet paper machine” does not provide enough information to select the working width, converting functions, cutting method or packing equipment.

Two factories producing toilet rolls may require very different configurations. One may need a semi-automatic rewinder and band saw for several changing products. Another may require a connected line with automatic log cutting and multi-roll packing for one stable specification.

Providing the following information helps the supplier prepare a proposal that is easier to compare and more closely related to the planned factory.

Define the Finished Product

The finished product is the foundation of the equipment configuration.

For toilet paper rolls, provide:

  • Finished-roll width

  • Finished-roll diameter

  • Core diameter or coreless requirement

  • Number of plies

  • Paper basis weight

  • Perforation length

  • Sheets per roll

  • Embossing requirement

  • Rolls per retail pack

For facial tissue, provide:

  • Unfolded sheet dimensions

  • Finished folded dimensions

  • Number of plies

  • Paper basis weight

  • Sheets per pack

  • Finished stack dimensions

  • Soft-pack, bottom-draw or box format

  • Pack dimensions

For paper napkins, confirm the unfolded size, folded size, folding arrangement, printing colors, embossing and sheets per pack.

A physical sample is often more useful than a general product photograph. If a sample is unavailable, prepare a drawing that clearly separates the unfolded and finished dimensions.

Provide the Raw Material Specification

The same machine can behave differently with different raw materials. Paper width, basis weight, strength, softness and roll condition all affect feeding and continuous operation.

Useful raw-material information includes:

  • Jumbo roll width

  • Jumbo roll diameter

  • Jumbo roll core diameter

  • Paper basis weight

  • Number of plies

  • Virgin, recycled or blended paper

  • Dry tensile strength

  • Moisture condition

  • Available supplier specifications

For nonwoven cleaning cloths, also provide the material composition, thickness, stretch and surface characteristics.

If possible, use the intended production material during factory testing. Settings prepared with an unrelated paper grade may need to be changed after installation.

Explain the Required Output

A target such as “high speed” is not sufficiently precise.

State the preferred output in a unit that matches the finished product, such as:

  • Rolls per minute

  • Packs per minute

  • Sheets per minute

  • Tonnes per day

  • Cartons per shift

Also explain:

  • Working hours per shift

  • Number of shifts per day

  • Planned production days

  • Product changeover frequency

  • Number of product specifications

The complete line should be evaluated rather than only the main machine. A high-speed rewinder cannot increase finished-pack output if cutting or packing is slower.

Confirm the Packaging Format

Packaging affects counting, transfer, machine interfaces and workshop length.

Provide:

  • Individual or grouped packing

  • Number of rolls or packs per package

  • Bag, film, box or carton dimensions

  • Printed registration requirement

  • Secondary packing method

  • Manual or automatic carton handling

  • Private-label packaging requirements

If several packaging formats are required, explain which one has the greatest production volume. This helps distinguish the primary configuration from occasional products.

Describe the Preferred Automation Level

Automation should be described by the operations the factory wants to connect.

Explain whether operators can handle:

  • Product transfer

  • Roll or stack arrangement

  • Packing-material replenishment

  • Secondary packing

  • Carton loading

  • Finished-product movement

A semi-automatic arrangement may be practical when products change frequently or the initial order volume is uncertain. A connected automatic line may be more suitable when specifications remain stable and labor reduction is a priority.

Provide Workshop Information

The workshop drawing should show more than the total floor area.

Include:

  • Internal length and width

  • Clear height

  • Door positions and dimensions

  • Columns

  • Existing equipment

  • Raw-material entrance

  • Finished-product exit

  • Electrical supply location

  • Compressed-air connection

  • Restricted areas

Space is also required for operation, maintenance, jumbo roll loading, packaging materials and finished-product storage.

Confirm Local Utilities

Provide the available:

  • Voltage

  • Frequency

  • Number of phases

  • Main electrical capacity

  • Compressed-air pressure

  • Compressed-air volume

  • Vacuum conditions where applicable

Do not assume that the supplier will automatically know the electrical conditions at the destination.

State What Is Already Available

If the factory already owns equipment, provide its dimensions, output, discharge direction and product range.

This information is important when adding:

  • A new rewinder

  • Automatic log cutting

  • Conveyors

  • Packing equipment

  • Bundle packing

  • Case packing

A new machine should not be considered connected simply because it can be placed beside the existing equipment.

A Better Inquiry Produces a Better Proposal

A detailed inquiry does not require the buyer to understand every technical component. The purpose is to explain the product, material, output, packaging and factory conditions clearly.

With this information, the supplier can identify the necessary converting functions, practical automation level and equipment interfaces. The resulting proposal is also easier for the buyer to review because each machine can be connected to a specific production requirement.
